57th Street Reconstruction Project receives ASCE Eastern Branch Project of the Year Award
In 2005, the City of Sioux Falls authorized the reconstruction of a section of 57th Street between Cliff Avenue and Sycamore Avenue. The arterial roadway was expected to encounter up to 25,000 vehicles per day by 2025 and an at-grade railroad crossing was already causing traffic backups and increased residential side street traffic.
Engineering design by HDR and geotechnical engineering by GeoTek Engineering resulted in expanding the street from 2 to 4 lanes and constructing an overpass of the railroad tracks. Identification of a layer of highly compressible soil at the earthen embankment for the overpass required cost effective solutions including project phasing to allow pre-settlement prior to street paving.
This project was awarded the ASCE Eastern Branch Project of the Year and has recently applied for an award by the Associated Consulting Engineers Council.
