41st Street Bridge Reconstruction Project
The 41st Street Bridge over the Big Sioux River is being reconstructed. Bridge reconstruction is part of the Sioux Falls Flood Control Project and is required in order to raise the flood control levee system in the area. Bridge reconstruction will take place in two phases to allow the road to remain open, with four lanes of traffic maintained at all times. The project will utilize accelerated construction methods including “H-pile” piers, cast-in-place concrete abutments, and pre-stressed concrete box girders. The contractor has a maximum of 140 calendar days to reopen 41st Street to seven lanes of traffic. Work on the project started March 29, 2010 and the bridge is expected to be open for traffic by August 15, 2010.
GeoTek performed a geotechnical exploration program for design of the driven pile foundation system in 2004, and has also been retained by the City of Sioux Falls to perform dynamic pile analyzer (PDA) testing of the project test piles along with observation during production pile driving operations. GeoTek will also perform construction materials quality control testing and observation services for the project. The testing will include cast-in-place concrete; concrete paving, and soil compaction testing.
